John Dallow jnr 1875 - 1954
John, my great grandfather, was born on 27 June 1875 at Darby St,
Blackheath, the second son and third child of John
& Hannah Dallow.
He married Edith "Edie" Eliza Jukes about 1899, and they
lived at Ivycrest, Waterfall Lane, Blackheath. They had four children,
Percy, Daisy, Eva and Dorothy. Tragically Percy was killed in a
motorcycle accident when he was only 20.
The family lived at Ivy Crest until about 1925 (Dorothy says she
was 9 when they moved) when they moved to another house built by
the firm, Oaklands, Ridgeacre Lane, Quinton.
He became a partner, together with his brother Thomas, in their
father's business, which then became known as John Dallow &
Sons Ltd.
John loved literature and music and taught himself to play piano.
He was also very fond of history. Dorothy recalls that he was also
very good with figures, a skill that she regrets he did not pass
on to her...
He built the two houses 362 and 364 Ridgacre Rd in the grounds of
Oaklands (360) for Daisy and Dorothy. Apparently Daisy's dining
room was where exactly where his chicken run used to be. (Dorothy
May 2001).
Eva, my grandmother, described John and Edie as "the perfect
parents", and was devoted to them. She always said that she
could not have had a better childhood, which is a wonderful thing
for anyone to say.
